Naturalization: The U.S. Naturalization Process
When can you apply?
You may apply during the 90 days before your Green Card anniversary!
Five years after receiving your Green Card, or Three years after receiving your Green Card if you are still married and your spouse has been a U.S. citizen for at least three years.
What are the eligibility requirements?
- A clean criminal record during the last 5/3 years
- No trips outside the U.S. for 6 months or more
- Continuous residence in the U.S. during the last 5/3 years and in the
- state where you are applying for at least the past 3 months
- Filing and paying your taxes
What is the timeline?
You file the application and forms with a $725 fee, receive a receipt, get scheduled for fingerprints, and later for an *interview* (you \ don’t nee d to attend with your spouse).
What should you bring to the interview?
- Interview notice
- Green Card
- Passport
- Driver’s license
- Birth certificate (original + translation)
- Copies of your last 3 years’ tax returns
- Originals of all supporting documents you submitted
- If applying based on marriage – additional supporting documents
What happens at the interview?
The officer will ask you to swear to tell the truth.
You will take:
- A civics test (10 questions out of 100; you must answer 6 correctly)
- A basic English test to show you can read, write, speak, and understand English.
Sometimes you receive the decision immediately.
Congratulations! If approved, you’ll be scheduled for the Oath Ceremony.
Bring your ceremony notice, Green Card (you’ll surrender it), ID, and any immigration documents. You will swear allegiance, sing the national anthem, and receive your Certificate of Naturalization – your path to a U.S. passport.
